Pedestrians hustle down Richmond Road as Ottawa was hit with heavy rain Saturday January 11, 2020.
Welcome to the winter of 2020. It seems like all we’ve been writing (and talking) about is the wide swing in temperatures.
It’s been a wild ride, and this weekend is no different.
Saturday started out with fog and rain, and a lot of both.
Most parts of the region were expected to receive about 20 to 30 mm of the wet stuff by Saturday evening.
The rain was then expected to change to freezing rain, mixed at times with ice pellets. That was to persist through the night before changing to snow by Sunday morning.
By noon Saturday, the conditions prompted the National Capital Commission to close all trails and parking lots in Gatineau Park.
In addition to the rain, the NCC said there was concern that falling tree branches could create a hazard.”The Gatineau Park Visitor Centre and its parking lot remain open to the public,” the agency said.
Ice accumulation of between 10 and 20 mm was possible by Sunday morning. Environment Canada said.
The precipitation was expected to end on Sunday near noon.
Saturday’s high is expected to reach a high of 9 C, before temperatures drop overnight to -5 C.
Hold on to your umbrella, because it’s going to be windy as well. The wind starting from the southwest Saturday morning should be 20 km/h, shifting to the north this afternoon. The winds will turn up a notch tonight coming from the northeast to 30 km/h, gusting to 50. That wind will make it feel closer to -13.
